Gary Marks Songs Recorded by Other Artists
Cris Williamson and Teresa Trull recorded three Gary Marks compositions — Gary Marks wrote "For Molly's Sky," "The Love We Take," and "Soulful Days" — on the Cris Williamson and Teresa Trull 1989 album Country Blessed (Olivia Records/Second Wave).
Cris Williamson later included "Soulful Days" on The Essential Cris Williamson (2005), a career-spanning double-disc retrospective of her own selected essential songs.
Teresa Trull recorded Gary's song "Only Time Can Tell," and co-wrote and recorded the title track "A Step Away," on her 1986 album A Step Away (Redwood Records).
In 2024, Sony/Alamo Records artist Reuben Aziz recorded "IDOLS," co-written with Gary Marks, from Aziz's album how did we end up here — a release that drew co-signs from Stormzy and other major UK artists.

Gary Marks: Musical Collaborators & Recording History
Singer-songwriter Gary Marks has written songs for, performed with, and recorded alongside a number of notable musicians across his five-decade career — several of whom went on to become major names in jazz, film scoring, and women’s music. This traces those specific collaborations, album by album.
John Scofield
In 1974, Gary Marks self-produced his debut album, Gathering, recorded at Ultra Sonic Studios in New York. The recording marked the debut studio session for guitarist John Scofield, who later became one of the most influential jazz guitarists of his generation. Scofield's guitar work also appears on Gary Marks's 1978 album Thoughts of Why. Scofield went on to record and perform with Miles Davis, Billy Cobham, Gary Burton, Charles Mingus, Herbie Hancock, and Pat Metheny, among many others.
Paul McCandless
Paul McCandless — co-founder of the pioneering jazz ensemble Oregon and a Grammy-nominated reed player — performed on Gary Marks's groundbreaking 1978 recording Thoughts of Why. McCandless also performed on Marks's 1988 album The Real World. His reed work (oboe, English horn, saxophones) helped define the jazz-rock sound running through Marks's catalog — a connection the music press has continued to cite in coverage of Marks's 2026 archival releases.
Art Lande & Rubisa Patrol
Pianist Art Lande, known for his work in the ECM Records jazz catalog, played piano on a number of tracks on Gary Marks's Upon Oanda's Wing, with Marks performing piano on the remaining tracks. Marks also opened for Art Lande at the Santa Barbara Opera House in 1976, with both artists performing solo sets. Lande's group, Rubisa Patrol, performed on Upon Oanda's Wing as well as Thoughts of Why.
Mark Isham
Mark Isham — the Grammy- and Emmy-winning composer known for scoring dozens of major films — recorded with Gary Marks, playing trumpet on Thoughts of Why, prior to Isham's transition into one of Hollywood's most in-demand film composers.
David Samuels
Vibraphonist David Samuels — a Grammy-winning member of Spyro Gyra for seventeen years and co-founder of the Caribbean Jazz Project — performed on Gathering in 1974, marking his recording debut alongside fellow future jazz great John Scofield. Samuels also performed on Thoughts of Why. Over his career, Samuels went on to record and perform with Gerry Mulligan, Chet Baker, Frank Zappa, Carla Bley, Pat Metheny, David Friedman, and Gary Burton.
Bill Douglass
Bassist Bill Douglass, known for his work on ECM Records and as a member of Art Lande's group Rubisa Patrol, played on Gary Marks's Upon Oanda's Wing and Thoughts of Why.
Stef Burns
Guitarist Stef Burns played electric guitar on Gary Marks's 1988 album The Real World, as well as on A Whisper Can Change the World. Burns toured and recorded with the Alice Cooper Band and Narada Michael Walden, and since 1995 has been the guitarist for Vasco Rossi, Italy's best-selling rock artist, performing with him on sold-out stadium tours across Italy.
Jim Scott
Grammy-winning mixing engineer Jim Scott — known for his work with Tom Petty, Wilco, and Sting — mixed the majority of the songs on Gary Marks's A Whisper Can Change the World.
Mark Needham
Grammy-award nominated mixing engineer Mark Needham — known for his work with Fleetwood Mac, The Killers, and Chris Isaak — mixed two tracks on A Whisper Can Change the World, and a number of tracks on Marks’s subsequent recordings.
Cris Williamson and Teresa Trull
In 1988, Gary Marks released the album The Real World. The following year, Cris Williamson and Teresa Trull — recording as a duo for Olivia Records — covered three songs from that album on their 1989 record Country Blessed (released on Olivia Records' Second Wave label): "Soulful Days," "The Love We Take," and "For Molly's Sky."
"Soulful Days" was later selected for Williamson's 2005 career retrospective, The Essential Cris Williamson (Wolf Moon Records).
Teresa Trull
Teresa Trull recorded one of Gary Marks's signature songs, "Only Time Can Tell," on her 1986 album A Step Away (Redwood Records). Marks also co-wrote the title track to that album. Trull contributed backing vocals on a number of Marks's recordings.
Reuben Aziz
Gary Marks co-wrote the song "Idols" with Reuben Aziz, a songwriting collaboration bringing together two distinct creative voices on a single track. "Idols" appears on Aziz's breakout 2024 project how did we end up here, which drew notable industry attention, including a track-by-track feature in Wonderland Magazine.
Gary Marks: Critical Recognition for his album Crossroads
In 2026, Gary Marks’s vinyl album Crossroads was selected by Record Store Day UK / Europe 2026 along with albums by The Rolling Stones, Fleetwood Mac, John Lennon, George Harrison, Taylor Swift, and John Coltrane, among others. It spans more than five decades of Gary Marks’s songwriting, from his 1970s folk-jazz albums featuring John Scofield, Art Lande, Paul McCandless, David Samuels, and Mark Isham, through compositions he wrote in 2021. The songs from Crossroads have received independent coverage from Noise11, EARMILK, It’s Psychedelic Baby!, The Arts Desk, Stereo Embers Magazine, FAME Magazine, PopDust, and Americana Highways.
In previous decades Marks’s recordings received positive reviews in the San Jose Mercury, Jazz Magazine, Oakland Tribune, and San Francisco Bay Guardian.
