A Hacker Novel Without the Jargon

Cody's fluency with virtual worlds and code is treated as a character trait rather than a technical skill. The comedy stays focused on Cody's inability to read real-world situations as clearly as he reads game clues on a screen. Scarlet's reappearance late in the book isn't the "something real" the ending depends on. It's something else.

The Rottweiler named Bob, improbably, is one of the few characters in the book who never lies to Cody, which says as much about the novel's take on people as it does about the nature of Rottweilers. Bob, however, would also be happy to kill Cody on the spot. In that way, he is just another member of the cast.
