Alien Nights
II wrote all these songs during the COVID pandemic. There’s no direct reference to it, but the isolation and craziness during that time affected the images I used, and the messages I tried to convey.
The song, Where We Started, is about the political craziness that was going on at the time, which replicated itself — like a virus often does — four years later.
The song, Annie, is about a desperate man who feels terribly isolated living through COVID alone. He ventures out one night and sees a beautiful young woman sitting a few tables across from him at a café. She sees this odd man staring at her and smiles, along with a brief nod, before putting her mask on and walking away. This interaction makes him wonder if she’s the one he’s been searching for, longing for: that smile, that look, does she feel the same way? The internal craziness that follows leads him on a wild search for her, down every street, around every corner, which eventually leads him… back into himself.
Crossbeams is my signature song from the album. The lyrics came about after I had a very weird meditation, which turned into a bit of a revelation about thoughts, memories, the senses, and how to carry on in this world.— I told you it was a weird meditation!
As for the song, Alien Nights, I’d like to thank my son Shawn, who has been angling to play drums on my albums since he was five. At eighteen, he finally made it happen. He played on the title track and absolutely nailed it.
Also, thank you to Ian Fait for mind-melding with me throughout. He’s a great young engineer and a fantastic bass player.
And special thanks to my good friend Tom Finch of Big Brother and the Holding Company, for his very “alien” guitar solo on the title track. I guess he once knew someone like that too.
