Adam and Jenna fell in love before the world fell in love with her. She was his roadie, hauling gear and setting up equipment for Adam's local shows around San Francisco. A year later she is quickly becoming a superstar. The songs she sings are his. The two of them try to stay sane inside a system that encourages each of them to become larger than life. Eventually the rocket ride flies Jenna too high, too fast. At the apex, Adam presents her with an idea: a gamble almost no superstar would dare consider.

Life Imitates Art

SuperStar was written in 2007, the same year Marks privately released his eighth album, A Whisper Can Change the World. It was during the long stretch of his career when he was deliberately making music outside the commercial music industry. That vantage point shows in the novel: Marks writes Jenna and Adam's rise with the specificity of someone who has watched how the industry and fame actually operate on musicians, even though his own catalog took the opposite path. Two of his other novels, Acoustic Punk (2023) and The Improviser (2024), return to music-industry life from a very different angle. Both are comedies rather than romances, but the same insider's view runs through all three.

The book's depiction of fame's mechanics—the handlers, the scale, the loss of ordinary privacy, the chance to fulfill almost any desire—comes from someone who chose, repeatedly, to stay on the other side of that machine, while watching friends willingly strap in for the ride.

Adam's proposed solution to Jenna's industry-orchestrated ascension is a real one. It will either make her bigger than the machine that made her, or cost her everything she worked so hard to create. It's a gamble any current superstar might want to study before it's too late.
