It's 1974 and you ask your local dealer for some folky NYC jazz/rock, but you've heard all the Tim Buckley and Terry Callier offerings. He slides Gathering by Gary Marks across the counter, whispering, "This is the good stuff." Word was that Marks scoured Boston for the best, most compatible players for his quirky material, gathering future jazz greats like John Scofield around a mic to lay down his complex tracks in one gloriously continuous take.

Now, five decades on, Marks has released Crossroads, a chronological retrospective from a criminally overlooked career. A refusal to tour and play the industry game may have left him sidelined, but Crossroads is testament to the fact that he never gave up, his passionate worldview writing undiminished. It's fascinating to hear how the voice has matured, while his musical imagination simply shifted to suit the times – '88's gorgeous 'The Love We Take' the equal of anything produced by Marc Cohn or Bruce Hornsby.
