Gary Marks and Stef Burns: Guitarist on The Real World and A Whisper Can Change the World

Guitarist Stef Burns played on Gary Marks's The Real World before joining the Alice Cooper Band and, since 1995, Vasco Rossi's touring band.

Burns played electric guitar on Gary Marks's 1988 album The Real World,* and again on A Whisper Can Change the World (2007). Marks has described Burns as "a guitar wizard" on The Real World, a three-word assessment that has held up: Burns went on to tour and record with the Alice Cooper Band and Narada Michael Walden, and since 1995 has been the longtime guitarist for Vasco Rossi, one of Italy's best-selling and most enduring rock artists, performing sold-out stadium tours across Italy for many decades.

On the Records: The Real World and A Whisper Can Change the World

Burns first worked with Marks before joining Alice Cooper, and later returned for A Whisper Can Change the World in 2007. Those two Gary Marks albums sit roughly two decades apart in Marks's catalog, both self-produced and privately released outside the conventional label format. It’s the kind of session work that rarely gets documented until the musician involved becomes well known enough for people to look back and ask who played on what.

A guitarist good enough to be part of a stadium tour once played on a Gary Marks record, a verifiable marker of the caliber of musician Marks consistently worked with, even on albums few people outside his own circle heard until decades later.

Two Very Different Recording Contexts

The Real World was recorded for free, in a small studio, by an engineer Marks had taught piano to years earlier. A Whisper Can Change the World was mixed in a Grammy-winning engineer's Los Angeles studio nearly two decades later.

Burns's guitar work connects both ends of that range, early private session and later professional production, in a catalog that otherwise moved almost entirely outside commercial music-industry channels until Marks's vinyl album Crossroads was distributed internationally as a Record Store Day UK/Europe release in 2026.
