Skylar Marks, age 13

Skylar Marks is, above all else, a sweet and beautiful human being, and a great friend. We have had some very uncommon moments as father and daughter. For instance, last Christmas Eve, she was out on the deck taking in the moon and the ocean, interpreting what she was hearing with her voice and guitar. And I was in the adjacent living room, listening to her muted strumming and singing, while I worked on a new song of my own. Both of us finished writing our songs at the same moment, then we gathered in the living room and shared our creations with each other. 

Sky was born Skylar Kelsey Paris Marks, on August 19th, 1996.  

At the age of six, she began playing piano. She just began playing and singing with no lessons. She would ask me questions from time to time, and I would show her only what she asked of me.

First she learned a few songs from the classic play, "Annie." Then came songs of mine, usually learned in a few hours at most. She rarely forgot the patterns and rhythms I showed her. Then she learned dozens of Beatles songs and then Elton John. Then Chaka Kahn, Bruce Springsteen, Cold Play, John Ondrasik, basically playing by ear anything she heard and liked on YouTube. Her tastes and repertoire are expanding as she chooses for herself how to grow as a musician.

At the age of seven she began to write songs. They were "cute" at first, but within a few months the newer songs became profoundly deep and moving.

Her first CD, "Sky Writing," was recorded when she was eight. Sky wrote all the songs, sang all the vocal parts, and played all the instruments --- as she has done on all of her CDs since.

By the time she was ten she had learned guitar as well as piano, and had written and recorded her second CD, "Running Home." At this point people began to take notice of her special talent. Producers and videographers began to ask if she would work with them. Ever humble, and a tomboy at heart, she took it all in stride.  

She has performed on a number of occasions in front of thousands of people, in California, New Mexico, and Toronto. (One of the songs on her latest CD is a live performance from one of these performances.) Overall, however, she prefers to stay out of the limelight. Her passion is to write and record her own songs.

In early 2009, Skylar finished her third CD consisting of nine new compositions, "Walking with the Wind." It includes Skylar playing a very 'trippy' harmonica solo on the title track.
